We performed MRI volumetric measurements of the amygdala ( AM ) and hippocampal formation ( HF ) in a group of 43 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy not controlled by optimal drug treatment . ^^^ The mean values of AM and HF volumes ipsilateral to the EEG focus were significantly smaller than those of normal controls . ^^^ The volumetric measurements showed a more pronounced atrophy of the AM in patients with a history of PFC , although the HF volumes were also smaller in this group . ^^^

We studied 70 epileptic patients by using magnetic resonance imaging volumetric measurements of amygdala ( AM ) and hippocampal formation ( HF ) . ^^^ In 91 % of the 45 TLE patients without foreign tissue lesions , there was significant smallness of the AM and / or HF coinciding with the side of electroencephalographic seizure onset . ^^^ We performed a linear regression analysis , plotting the number of years of recurrent seizures and the estimated seizure frequency against the volumes of the AM and HF . ^^^ There was no correlation between either of these two parameters and AM or HF volume ( p > 0 . 9 ) . ^^^ There was also no correlation between the patient ' s age and volumetric measurements of AM or HF , nor did these measurements correlate with the occurrence of generalized seizures . ^^^

In this study we compared the results of qualitative visual analysis of MRI with volumetric studies of the amygdala ( AM ) and hippocampal formation ( HF ) in a group of 31 patients . ^^^ The volumetric measurements of AM and HF were accurate in lateralizing the epileptogenic area in patients with TLE , concordant with the EEG in 92 % ; there was no false lateralization . ^^^ In patients with non TLE , there was no volume asymmetry of AM or HF . ^^^

We studied 31 consecutive patients with temporal and extratemporal epilepsy who underwent presurgical evaluation with stereotaxic depth EEG ( SEEG ) to assess the relationships between amygdalo hippocampal ( AM HF ) atrophy and the location of SEEG seizure onset and SEEG interictal abnormalities . ^^^ There was no significant correlation between the frequency of SEEG interictal spikes and the amount of AM HF atrophy . ^^^ However , we found a significant correlation between the severity of SEEG background disturbance in AM and HF and the degree of atrophy of these structures . ^^^

Plasma adrenomedullin ( AM ) , a novel hypotensive peptide , has been shown to increase in heart failure ( HF ) . ^^^ This study sought to examine the cardiovascular and renal effects of intravenous infusion of AM in HF rats and sham operated rats ( control ) using two doses of AM that would not induce hypotension . ^^^ Low dose AM increased urine flow ( +21 % in HF , +29 % in control ) and urinary sodium excretion ( +109 % in HF , +123 % in control ) without changes in any hemodynamic variables . ^^^ In contrast , high dose AM slightly decreased mean arterial pressure ( 3 % in HF , 5 % in control ) and significantly increased cardiac output ( +20 % in HF , +12 % in control ) . ^^^ Infusion of high dose AM resulted in significant decreases in right ventricular systolic pressure ( 11 % ) and right atrial pressure ( 28 % ) only in HF rats . ^^^

We attempted to correlate the clinical features with different patterns of hippocampal formation ( HF ) and amygdala ( AM ) atrophy in patients with TLE without foreign tissue lesion . ^^^ They were divided into five groups according to MRIvol results : pure AM atrophy ( n = 11 , 10 unilateral and one bilateral ) , unilateral HF atrophy ( n = 16 ) , bilateral HF atrophy ( n = 12 ) , unilateral AM + HF atrophy ( n = 13 ) , and patients with normal volumes of AM and HF ( n = 13 ) . ^^^ MRIvol of AM and HF were performed by using a protocol previously described by Watson et al . We investigated whether adrenomedullin ( AM ) participates in the pathophysiology during the transition from left ventricular hypertrophy ( LVH ) to heart failure ( HF ) . ^^^ Two molecular forms of AM levels in the plasma and myocardium at the LVH stage were significantly elevated compared with those in controls , and they were further increased at the HF stage . ^^^ Interestingly , the LV tissue AM mature / AM total ratio was higher only in the HF group than in controls and LVH . ^^^ AM gene expression was significantly increased at the LVH stage and was further increased at the HF stage . ^^^ Furthermore , gene expression of AM receptor system components such as calcitonin receptor like receptor ( CRLR ) , receptor activity modified protein 2 ( RAMP 2 ) , and RAMP 3 were significantly increased at the stage of LVH and HF . ^^^

In this study , we investigated the differences of the concentrations of cardiac AM between pressure overloaded ( PO ) heart failure ( HF ) and volume overloaded ( VO ) HF in humans . ^^^ METHODS AND RESULTS : We measured AM mature and AM glycine by immunoradiometric assays in pericardial fluid and plasma in 38 patients who underwent valve replacement surgery ( PO HF : aortic stenosis , n=14 ; VO HF : aortic or mitral regurgitation , n=24 ) . ^^^ Plasma AM mature ( VO HF : +59 % , PO HF : +65 % , P < . 05 ) and AM glycine ( VO HF : +43 % , PO HF : +50 % , P < 0 . 05 ) were similarly higher in the 2 HF groups than in the control group . ^^^ Interestingly , pericardial fluid AM mature was markedly higher than that in plasma ( control : +789 % , VO HF : +1050 % , PO HF : +1745 % , all P < . 001 ) . ^^^ Pericardial fluid AM mature was higher in VO HF ( +106 % , P < . 01 ) than in controls and they were further increased in PO HF ( +243 % , P < . 05 ) . ^^^

BACKGROUND : Increased circulating adrenomedullin ( AM ) concentration has been reported in congestive heart failure ( HF ) and considered as a possible marker of cardiac dysfunction . ^^^ HYPOTHESIS : The study was undertaken to assess the relationship between circulating AM concentration and left ventricular ( LV ) functional state , estimated by echo Doppler techniques in patients with mild to moderate HF and different degrees of LV dysfunction . ^^^ METHODS : Plasma AM , B type natriuretic peptide ( BNP ) , and N terminal ( NT ) proBNP levels were measured in 55 patients with HF ( New York Heart Association [ NYHA ] 1 n = 8 , 2 n = 26 , 3 n = 21 ) and in 20 controls ; dP / dt was calculated by the Doppler tracing of the mitral regurgitation jet . ^^^ CONCLUSIONS : The combination of depressed contractility and increased AM may provide a clue for further characterization of the severity of LV dysfunction in HF , independent of baseline LV ejection fraction . . ^^^
